Despite these barriers, the need for public space to connect with like-minded people remained. “The pier is a sentimental place to me,” explained Kenyon Farrow, the executive director of Queers for Racial and Economic Justice, who was an organizer with FIERCE. “When I first moved to New York, it was one of the first places I was introduced to as queer space.
